Weight Loss and Cardiovascular Risk

  • A 2020 systematic review and network meta-analysis of randomized trials compared the dietary macronutrient patterns of common dietary programs in relation to weight loss and reduction of cardiovascular risk. They tested each diet with the outcomes of change in body weight, change in LDL/HDL ratios, systolic and diastolic blood pressure and C reactive protein at both 6 and 12-month follow ups. They evaluated 121 eligible trials with over 21,000 patients included. The largest effect on weight reduction and blood pressure were Atkins, DASH, and Zone at the six month mark. No diets significantly improved levels of HDL or C reactive protein at six months.1
